Jess’s Story

As the founder of her own international swimwear brand and an agency that works with some of the world’s top influencers, JESSICA WILLIAMSON seems like the kind of girl who was born with radiant self-confidence! Would you ever expect that her insecurities with her skin once held her back from living her life?

Growing up, I struggled with…

My skin. When I hit puberty, I broke out with acne all over my face, chest and back. People made it sound like an easy fix (“have you tried cleaning your face twice a day”?) but honestly, I had tried EVERYTHING! There was no hormonal imbalance, my diet was fine, and I took great care of my skin too – but still they stayed. For me, it simply came down to genetics.

I felt like…

I was helpless – because nothing worked. I would spend hours in front of the mirror trying to make my skin look “acceptable” to go to school or leave the house. It was really tough and definitely impacted my self-confidence.

Did this ever hold you back from living life to the fullest?

Definitely! Some days I just didn’t leave because I didn’t want anyone to see my skin. I spent so much time trying to cover every pimple before going out – even though I HATED wearing makeup because by the end of the day it would have broken out worse!

I also used to wear t-shirts under every cute strappy dress or top so that no one could see the acne on my chest and back – even on 40 degree days when I would be so hot!! I missed out on enjoying so many fun times because I was too worried about my appearance, when all that really matters is to be HAPPY.

What changed when you started to see your worth BEYOND these insecurities?

I still have acne now, but I don’t let that hold me back anymore! Most of the time I don’t even wear makeup, and I feel better for it J I ENJOY life rather than caring what others think and I spend time with those who make me feel amazing and empowered, rather than those who may judge me for it. It really makes all the difference when you surround yourself with uplifting people but also when you have confidence in yourself, just as you are!

Dear younger me:

You are stronger and more amazing than you know… Life is what you make of it, and I know that your acne may seem like the biggest thing in the world for you right now but you are going to do amazing things. Just remember to enjoy life and spread kindness, happiness, light and laughter – it’s what you make of it that counts.
